Why I Chose Eye 4 Colour inkjet editions over C-type
Photographer – James Taylor

In the first in a new series of artist profiles, Eye4Colour invited Brighton based Photographer James Taylor to showcase his travel photography and discuss his reasons for leaving C-Type enlargements behind.

I had previously used C-Type photographic prints for my work and was satisfied with the results, they offered a good balance between gamut, durability and finish. When Graeme at Eye 4 Colour contacted me and offered to print some tests to show the quality of the newly installed Epson wide format printer I was interested as I wasn’t convinced that this method would meet my expectations.
I chose images that contained challenging elements, smooth gradations and shadow detail to name two.

I joined Graeme for a session and he made the file conversions from Adobe RGB (1998) to the Ilford Gallerie Smooth Pearl 310gsm ICC profile that he’d made when setting up his workflow. The first thing I noticed was the gamut size, 948,000 colours which compared really well to RGB this was due to the printer using CMYK plus Orange, Green and Violet inks. When comparing the files to prints Eye 4 Colour use an Eizo Coloredge calibrated monitor and a D50 viewing cabinet which ensure accuracy as anything less just introduces the risk of errors in retouching.

I was impressed by the black density and the surface finish was perfect and will now collaborate with Graeme on future prints for exhibitions and sales.
